Why Am I So Burnt Out?

This feeling probably topped the list in 2025, without further ado, let's see how these 3 steps can help you let some steam out:
1. Understand what your burnout means
As we all know, life is a very personal journey. No one burnout are the same, so no one can put words in your mouth to say what causes it. It is important to identify where your burnout is stemmed from, so we know what we are working on. Here are some reasons you may find relevant to yours,
- what you are doing at work is tiring and demoralising
- you are fed up with the recurring relationship problems
- you have been giving 200% of your effort and receiving 2% in return
- you are under a lot of stress and fears? About work, family, friends, or personal growth?
- you need a break from a vicious cycle
2. Pick one of the following to cool down
Our brain is a big chunk of muscle. If you exhaust a muscle, you need to give it a massage. Give your head some space before you throw yourself into the next task. Pick one of the following activities to cool down:
i) Listen to a song like this one, pay attention to every single note, the highs and lows.
Purely focus on doing one thing. Just listen. Disconnect from the rest of the world. This is a very simple mindfulness practice that comes with lots of amazing benefits.
ii) Get rid of those unfulfilling feelings, do something that's instantly rewarding for 30 minutes:
- Go to the gym
- Take a walk
- Take a bath (or an icebath)
- Give your friend a surprise call and cheer each other up
- Do a little act of random kindness ALWAYS WORKS!
iii) Write down what's in your control and what's not.
Mapping out the locus of control is one of the most frequently used techniques in counselling, it helps take off some helplessness and redirect your energy on things that you can change. The more time you spend drwaing this map, the more you understand your values too. If you are interested, you can find the steps and the graph in my instagram post, Advent Calendar 2024 - Day 13:
